Vila Nova de Gaia City Council has approved the acquisition of 91 homes under agreements with Portugal’s Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), supported by €6.2 million from the country’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), according to Portuguese news agency Lusa.

The homes are covered by two applications approved by IHRU under the PRR’s Support Programme for Access to Housing. The first involves the rehabilitation of 65 existing homes across 10 parishes – Vilar do Paraíso, Madalena, Canelas, Santa Marinha, Vilar de Andorinho, Perosinho, Serzedo, Arcozelo, Canidelo and Olival –, while the second covers the acquisition of 31 homes in Grijó and Mafamude.

The first application will receive €1.58 million in non-repayable funding, while the second has been allocated €4.66 million, bringing the combined PRR support to €6.24 million.

Under the second scheme, 30 homes are located on Rua Américo de Oliveira in Grijó and one on Rua Fialho de Almeida in Mafamude. The homes will be made available under controlled and reduced-rent regimes linked to specific housing programmes.

The projects form part of Gaia’s efforts to expand its affordable housing stock through the acquisition and rehabilitation of residential properties with support from national and EU funding.
