Five years on from the opening of Mercadona's first store on Portuguese soil, the Spanish chain expects to close this year with a total of 60 outlets in operation in Portugal.
For this year, the retailer plans to open 11 new supermarkets, expanding into areas where it has not yet had a presence, such as Guarda and Évora. At the same time, the inauguration of the Logistics Block of Almeirim is scheduled for the second half of this year.
Brand close to reaching 50 stores open in the country
Currently, Mercadona employs more than five thousand people in Portugal and is present in 10 districts. According to a statement from the company, it is about to reach the milestone of 50 stores open in the country.
Last year, through its stores, it donated 1,200 tons of essential goods to more than 70 social institutions. From the Póvoa de Varzim Logistics Block, products corresponding to 21,400 shopping trolleys were distributed.
The next stores will be located in Guarda, Oliveira de Azeméis, Coimbra, Leiria, Évora, Vila Nova de Gaia, Sintra, Maia, Seixal and Barreiro.
