A meeting of the Oeiras City Council approved the Plano de Pormenor Norte de Caxias (PPNC), a project aimed at the rehabilitation of the old quarries in Caxias. This plan is now awaiting approval by the Municipal Assembly. The project envisages the construction of 600 homes, including around 60 for municipal housing, and 29 hectares of green space, corresponding to 70% of the total area of intervention, estimated at 42 hectares.
At stake is a private investment of 300 million euros, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, quoted by Idealista/news. The approval of this plan, together with the alteration of the delimitation of the National Ecological Reserve (REN) and the report on the weighting of the REN, is a major step forward.
The urban planning project encompasses an intervention in an area known as "Pedregueiras", focusing especially on a large area of former quarries covering approximately 42 hectares. The area in question is located to the west of the Bairro da Pedreira Italiana and to the south of the A5 freeway.
Vera Freire, head of the Territorial Planning Department of Oeiras Municipal Council, at a briefing session on the project, stressed that this is a plan aimed at attracting businesses, but it will also offer housing, commerce and other services, creating an area with mixed use activities.
