During her visit to Inditex's logistics centre in Meco, the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced an investment of 44 million euros to expand the logistics park in the town. Ayuso stressed that the Region of Madrid is the "logistical locomotive of Spain" and has become a reference in southern Europe, with 23 logistics parks spread throughout the region. She also emphasised that Madrid is the best connected region both geographically and in terms of connectivity and digitalisation.
This project is expected to generate 5,000 direct jobs in a sector that represents 7% of the regional GDP, with 36,000 companies and approximately 200,000 workers. The Meco logistics park will cover 132 hectares and 840,000 square metres of industrial plots, strategically located near the A-2, R-2 and Barajas airport.
In addition, Ayuso detailed that the works include new infrastructures and public facilities for the town, such as a new residence for the elderly, sports facilities and the pedestrianisation of the historic centre, with an additional investment of more than nine million euros.
The extension of the park will also include interior urbanisation and road connections, with a budget of 18.5 million euros, while the construction, extension and improvement of the supply and drainage networks in this sector and in the municipality will have a budget of 16 million euros.
Finally, the Community of Madrid, through Planifica Madrid, will carry out the necessary urbanisation works and work to preserve and integrate a 20-hectare wetland that is home to more than 130 species of birds, some of which are protected. For these environmental efforts, the regional government will be supported by the General Foundation of the University of Alcalá and its Chair of Environment.
