Acciona Energía and Prologis have announced an agreement for the installation of photovoltaic systems with a capacity of up to 10.5MWp on the rooftops of several Prologis properties in Spain. These installations will be converted into solar communities, generating clean and sustainable energy. Prologis will retain ownership of the communities, while Acciona Energía will be responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance for the next ten years.
The energy produced will be used to supply the energy needs of Prologis' customers and will facilitate the formation of solar communities in nearby areas. Residents within a two-kilometre radius will be able to sign up to use some of this energy in a shared self-consumption model, allowing them to reduce their electricity costs while consuming 100% renewable energy.
The first completed installations will be in Penedès, Barcelona and San Fernando de Henares, Madrid, with capacities of 2.5MWp and 3MWp respectively. These installations will save 3,300 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Prologis is on track to achieve its goal of installing 1GW of solar capacity by 2025, with more than 500MW already in operation. "We are a company that, given the current energy transition, is constantly working and innovating with new sustainable formulas to apply in our logistics parks and an example of this is this alliance with Acciona Energía. We have the Net Zero 2040 programme, which offers us a realistic timetable for achieving our sustainable goals and which includes the constant evaluation of the carbon footprint of all our buildings in order to draw up a plan of measures for the coming years," says Cristian Oller, Head of Asset Management for Southern Europe at Prologis.
Acciona Energía, for its part, reaffirms its commitment to self-consumption and distributed generation as a means to advance the decarbonisation of various sectors in Spain. The company provides energy services to corporate customers and public entities and has recently expanded its offering to residential customers and small and medium-sized enterprises.
