A group of investors plans to build a 6.4 MW data centre for artificial intelligence in Coruche, in the Santarém district, with investment of €220 million. The project is promoted by the Aura Capital fund through Aura Technologies, a European investment and development platform focused on digital infrastructure.
It will be the first in a network of compact data centres for AI training and inference, which is set to expand into Spain and southern France, as reported by ECO.
The facility will be located in the Sorraia Business Park, with capacity close to that of the Covilhã data centre. It is due to become operational at the end of 2027 and will employ around 30 people.
The project vehicle, Nextgen AIDC Coruche, based at the Coruche business incubator, asked the municipality to lift the charges and encumbrances on a plot in the Sorraia Business Park valued at around €180,000. The proposal has already been approved by the municipal executive.
The announcement comes as the environmental association Quercus counts 46 data centres already operating in Portugal, 25 of them in Lisbon and 11 in Porto. The Portuguese Government has said a further 44 could be added, four of them large-scale facilities, which would bring the total in the country to 90.
