Stoneshield Capital, through its DeepLabs platform specialising in Life Science and innovation, has initiated the development of the first science and innovation hub in Catalonia, known as BaSID (Barcelona Science Innovation District). This project, located in the towns of Sant Joan Despí and Esplugues de Llobregat, involves the acquisition of five properties totalling 75,000 square metres. With an investment of more than 200 million euros, DeepLabs seeks to establish the first scientific centre in the area.
The most important properties acquired by the management company are Il-lumina, in Esplugues de Llobregat, and Bayer, in Sant Joan Despí. These acquisitions are fundamental to boost BaSID as a campus specialising in life science and innovation in Catalonia.
Javier de Pablo, co-CEO of DeepLabs, has emphasised the company's commitment to position Barcelona as a benchmark in science and innovation, highlighting the creation of BaSID as the first private Life Science hub in Catalonia. The hub will offer advanced scientific facilities and laboratories for companies, organisations and research centres. Javier de Pablo stressed that the aim is to provide the best facilities in a collaborative environment.
The pharmaceutical company Bayer, which occupies nearly 50% of BaSID's space, will continue to be the hub's main company and will maintain its headquarters for Spain in these facilities. The entities will collaborate with the local ecosystem to foster innovation. Bayer's facilities at BaSID are recognised for their sustainability and efficiency, having achieved emissions neutrality by 2022. The company has implemented energy efficiency measures, such as solar panels and rainwater recovery systems.
BaSID is close to the Barcelona Science Park, and its location favours collaboration with large companies in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector, as well as with the hospital and university environment in the area.
Stoneshield is committed to Life Science
In addition to this project, Stoneshield Capital, through DeepLabs, is developing science and innovation districts in Spain. One example is MaSID, the first life science district in Spain, located in Tres Cantos, Madrid. This district has two campuses and a total area of 85,000 square metres, housing more than 3,000 professionals in areas such as biotechnology and biomedicine.
Pilar Gil, co-CEO and CSO of DeepLabs, highlighted the importance of the DeepLabs initiative in the Life Science and Innovation sector in Spain. According to the Spanish Association of Biocompanies (AseBio), investment in R&D in the biotechnology sector exceeded 1,000 million euros, demonstrating the relevance of the sector in the country.
DeepLabs, in its commitment to the Life Science field, considers it essential to offer a service and a variety of unique types of scientific spaces, in which entrepreneurs and large multinationals can develop their potential and respond to the concerns of the sector.
