The Barcelona Provincial Council announced that it will invest one hundred million euros over ten years in the "La Industrial+" project to transform the Barcelona Industrial School site into a center for innovation and research.
Part of this center, located in the heart of Barcelona's Eixample, will be the assembly hall, in operation since 2020, an auditorium and a cultural facility for holding congresses and conferences, with a main room for 600 people and ten adjoining rooms, and a residence for researchers and students. As a whole, it is planned to allocate 33,000 square meters to research and innovation. The project will incorporate 16,000 square meters of urban green.
The Industrial School campus currently houses the School of Arts and Crafts, the School of Work, the Institute of Photographic Studies and the School of Radiology. As for sports equipment, the site includes the Sant Jordi Pool and a football field.
"This is the largest axis of public innovation in Spain and probably in Europe," emphasizes Eloi Juvillà, commissioner of singular projects of the Barcelona Provincial Council.
The project takes on the challenge of becoming carbon neutral by 2050, for which photovoltaic panels, geothermal energy and other technologies to improve energy efficiency will be installed. The buildings that house the innovation hub will be the first in the Barcelona Provincial Council to incorporate the Leed energy certification..
