Azora, in partnership with Core Capital, has announced the launch of Quetta Data Centers, a new platform that plans to invest more than €500 million in the development of a network of six Edge data centres in Spain and Portugal. This project aims to locate these facilities near large urban areas and close to end consumers, seeking to optimise data traffic compared to large hyperscale data centres, which are generally located far from users.
Quetta Data Centres aims to complement the current market offering, taking advantage of the Iberian Peninsula's geographical position, access to renewable energy sources and existing communication infrastructures, including intercontinental submarine cables.
Quetta's main customers will be enterprises with a significant volume of data traffic, including content providers, IoT (Internet of Things), and gaming, which require low latency, i.e. minimal delay times in data transmission.
Investment in sustainable infrastructure
In the context of its commitment to sustainable infrastructure, Azora has begun construction of the first data centre in Madrid, specifically in Tres Cantos, and is progressing in negotiations for land acquisition and contracting for the construction of the remaining centres. "The launch of Quetta is part of our strategy of investing in sustainable infrastructure," Azora said in a statement.
Santiago Olivares, partner in charge of energy, infrastructure and sustainability investments at Azora, highlights the opportunity represented by the digitalisation of the economy: "The digitalisation of the economy offers very attractive investment opportunities in data centres, especially those aimed at companies that offer streaming content, gaming, augmented reality, internet of things and other technologies such as artificial intelligence that will experience strong growth".
Paco González, founding partner of Core Capital and CEO of Quetta, highlights the added value of this initiative: "This platform perfectly complements the current offer in the data centre market, supplying a demand for proximity with interconnected geographic coverage, low latency and 100% green that generates synergies with current operators, both retail and hyperscale, taking advantage of the excellent conditions of the Iberian Peninsula".
