The company’s intent was advanced a few months ago, but only now do we have a date, after 4 years of the REIT’s activity in Portugal. Spanish CNMV was already informed that Euronext Lisbon decided to list the shares from Merlin at its regulated market.
João Cristina, in charge of Merlin Properties in Portugal, explained to VI that Portugal «is one of Merlin’s core markets» and that with «our company’s listing on the Lisbon Stock Exchange, we intend to strengthen even more our presence in the country and signal the strategic value Portugal has for our company».
«We never hid the importance the Portuguese market has for us and, with this step, we hope to increase the visibility, reputation and recognition of our brand within the country. This will also allow Portuguese investors a more direct access to one of Europe’s largest real estate companies, specialised in acquiring and managing core and core-plus commercial real estate», he added.
Currently, the assets Merlin owns in Portugal, represent around 10% of the REIT’s entire portfolio, a share the company intends to increase. In 2019 alone, it acquired three assets in Portugal for 125 million euro: Nestlé’s headquarters, the Art’s building and the Torre Fernão de Magalhães building, in Lisbon.
