Merlin Properties has agreed with Edged Energy, a subsidiary of Endeavour, the construction of a network of ultra-energy-efficient data centers with zero net water consumption in Madrid, Bilbao, Barcelona and Lisbon. These assets will be installed in Merlin’s land reserves.
The first phase includes about 80 MW of capacity in the four locations. This is a long-term project that will be built progressively to meet demand needs.
«We serve a wide variety of clients, from technology companies in our most emblematic offices to national and international logistics operators in our logistics warehouses», says David Brush, co-founder of Merlin and special advisor of the Data Center Program in the company.
«The strategic location of the Iberian Peninsula allows it to position itself as the main gateway to connect the digital economies of Europe, North America, South America, Africa and the Middle East», adds.
The initial four data centers do not incur net water consumption for cooling, have an annualized Power Utilization Effectiveness (PUE) efficiency ratio of 1.15, and, use 67% less energy for cooling and general systems than average European data centers.
The energy used in these installations will come from renewable sources. In addition, each data center will have several hours of energy storage thanks to batteries that will allow the use of renewable energy during the 24 hours and will significantly increase its reliability.
The Madrid and Barcelona locations will have an approximate capacity of 20 MW each and the buildings located in Bilbao and Lisbon will have the necessary infrastructure to be able to build hyperscale facilities with more than 100MW of capacity each (20MW in first phase). «Our team has been building data centers for the past 25 years and these are some of the best locations we’ve seen in terms of access to fiber and renewable energy», points out Jakob Carnemark, founder of Edged Energy.
