The new unit is being constructed from scratch at Bela de São Tiago street, in Funchal, it will have 4 stars and 88 rooms spread out across two adjacent buildings, with restaurant, fitness & spa, rooftop with pool, solarium and lounge.
The project’s initial investment is 8 million euro, according to Publituris. In an interview to the newspaper, the company’s CEO, Juan Juliá, explains that «Portugal is our neighbouring country and has an open, tolerant and welcoming mindset, receiving well different cultures. With this new unit, the Axel Hotels’ usual public will have a new and different leisure offer, surrounded by nature and focused on well-being. Without a doubt, we will bring quality cosmopolitan tourism to the Island».
And he added that «Axel Hotels is the first LGBTI international hotel chain, with a ‘heterofriendly’ philiosophy where all are welcome. Cosmopolitan spaces with the best atmosphere, a meeting point for the international LGBTI community, diversity and respect are the main characteristics that differentiate us ».
The Funchal hotel will be the brand’s first in Portugal. It is also in its plans to expand its presence to Lisbon and Porto. However, Juan Juliá doesn’t offer any more details about these future investments.
