Aldi will start the construction works to expand its logistic platform located in Masquefa (Barcelona). It will be a 13.100 sqm expansion to be added to the current 29.640 sqm which constitute the platforms entire area. The forecast is that the structure’s expansion will be finalised by the beginning of 2022.
The expansion works include the creation of 7.450 sqm of cold storage areas, which will be executed following the highest quality standards so as to avoid breaks in the cold chain. The new installations will be fitted with photovoltaic panels which will allow them to generate a large part of the electricity required by the platform which will also be equipped with LED lighting.
Expansion in Catalonia and Balearic Isles
The expansion of the Masquefa logistic platform seeks to follow the company’s expansion plan for the coming years in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The supermarket chain opened this Wednesday in Barcelona, at calle Tallers, 74, its store number 75, in Catalonia, the tenth in Barcelona. This is the second autonomous region with more Aldi supermarkets, after Andalusia (with 81) and one of the more strategic for the company.
Currently, the company already has more than 1.600 employees in Catalonia, including store employees, logistics staff and professionals in charge of the stores the company has in Sant Cugat del Vallés.
In the Balearic Islands, the chain has increased its presence in the last few years, having reached 10 supermarkets.
Expansion plan
According to its expansion plan, Aldi announced recently it also intends building in Sagunto (Valencia) a new warehouse with more than 30.000 sqm to support its growth in the Mediterranean Arch region; as well as expanding in more than 14.000 sqm its Dos Hermanas (Seville) logistic platform and supporting its expansion in Andalusia.
The company currently has 338 establishments in Spain and expects to open, during this year, a further 40 new establishments across the country, of which 11 have been already been inaugurated. In total, it has more than 5.500 employees and it expects to reach 6.000 by the end of the second quarter.
